VO2 max stands for volume of oxygen maximum.
Put simply, it is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise, expressed as millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min).
When you exercise, your muscles need oxygen to help produce energy.
Your lungs have to get oxygen into your bloodstream. Your heart has to pump that oxygen-rich blood around your body. Your blood vessels have to deliver it where it is needed. Your muscles then have to extract the oxygen and use it to produce energy.
VO2 max therefore isn't really a measurement of one individual organ.
It is a measurement of the whole system working together.
That makes it particularly interesting from a longevity perspective.
What does a VO₂ max test tell you?
This is where things get interesting.
For decades, researchers have followed large groups of people and looked at how cardiorespiratory fitness relates to their health outcomes.
The pattern is remarkably consistent: people with higher levels of cardiorespiratory fitness tend to live longer and have lower rates of cardiovascular disease and other major health problems.
This is why the American Heart Association has argued that cardiorespiratory fitness should be treated rather like a clinical vital sign.
That is quite a statement.
And it makes sense when you think about what VO2 max actually represents.
A high VO2 max generally means your cardiovascular and respiratory systems, blood vessels and muscles are capable of working together efficiently under stress.
And that capacity matters.
Why does VO2 max matter for longevity?
Your VO2 testing at the Sussex Longevity Clinic
At Sussex Longevity Clinic, your VO₂ max assessment is a personalised, one-hour session with our specialist physiotherapist, Duncan.
Your appointment begins with a discussion of your goals and an explanation of the testing process. Duncan will then help you get comfortable on the exercise bike and carefully fit the respiratory mask, ensuring it is secure and correctly positioned for accurate measurement.
Once everything is fitted and checked, you'll complete a guided warm-up before progressing through our VO₂ max testing protocol. Using specialised metabolic testing equipment, we measure how your body responds to progressively more demanding exercise, providing an objective assessment of your aerobic capacity and cardiorespiratory fitness.
Throughout the session, Duncan will guide you through each stage, monitor your response to exercise and ensure you understand what to expect.
Following the test, you'll receive a detailed explanation of your results, including what your VO₂ max means, how it relates to your current fitness and what the findings may tell you about your aerobic capacity. Duncan will talk you through the key measurements and help you understand how to use this information to inform your training, fitness goals and long-term approach to health and wellbeing.
Your appointment is more than a number. It's an opportunity to gain a clearer understanding of your cardiovascular fitness, ask questions and leave with meaningful insights into your current physical capacity.
